Relabelling and garment information

Check label suitability and retain the product information required for the market where you sell.

Check before choosing a blank

If an own-brand label is part of your plan, raise it before selecting the garment. Ask whether the original brand label can be removed cleanly and what decoration or replacement-label options are supported for your order.

Keep required information

Branding and fibre information serve different purposes. GOV.UK guidance for Great Britain says textile labels must show fibre content, with additional requirements for products with different components. Manufacturers and retailers are responsible for complying with the labelling requirements.

Prepare the request

  • Exact garment references and colours.
  • Proposed label artwork, size and position.
  • The countries where the finished item will be sold.
  • Any care, fibre or other product information that must be retained.
  • Quantities and the date you need the finished stock.

Approve the complete product

Check the finished label placement, comfort and legibility alongside the garment and branding. Confirm the service and any cost before making relabelling part of your customer offer.

Brand labels and product information have different jobs

A removable or tear-away brand label does not by itself establish that every original label should be removed. Fibre composition and other relevant product information need to remain accurate for the finished item and its market. Keep the garment specification available when planning the replacement label.

For example, if you choose several colourways of one style, check whether their fibre compositions are identical before preparing one common label. A heather option may have different composition information from a solid colour. Confirm the actual product details rather than copying the wording from a different garment.

Check the physical result

  • Does the replacement fit the available label position?
  • Is the information readable at the actual size?
  • Is the attachment suitable and comfortable against the wearer?
  • Have you retained the correct information for the selected product?
  • Does the final presentation match the agreed sample or specification?

If you are selling beyond Great Britain, identify the destination markets in the brief and check their applicable requirements. The linked GOV.UK page describes the position for Great Britain; it does not establish the rules for every country. Confirm supported relabelling options and the complete charge before including them in your customer offer.
